Dear JSA,

My insured has a tilt bed tow truck, but is classified as a car carrier. What gives?

Sincerely,

Tow Truck or Not Tow Truck

Dear Tow,

It’s not that he owns a tow truck, it’s what he’s towing that matters. If he’s towing wrecked or disabled vehicles from a site, that’s being used as a tiltbed tow truck, and should be classified as such.

However, if he’s towing new or used vehicles, auto auction vehicles, or even salvage vehicles from an auto auction, then THAT is considered a car carrier. So you not only need to know what kind of vehicles he’s towing, but from whence he’s towing them.

Of course, as always, if you have any questions about the classification of any of these vehicles, just speak to any one of our Transportation Team and we’ll help you figure it out. Find out the “what” and “where” from the insured and we’ll handle the rest!
