Brian was born and raised in Winston-Salem, NC. He spent life growing up alongside his Grandfather, Rev. Jack T. Nance, in the Moravian Church. Brian was exposed to the insurance industry at age 1. His mother worked at Integon (now National General) for over 30 years.

After high school graduation, Brian attended Appalachian State University,  graduating from the Brantley Risk and Insurance Center. While a student, he worked as an accounting tutor, computer lab technician, a mobile campus computer technician, and as a web developer for campus organizations. Over summer breaks, he accepted internships at Integon as a computer technician. After graduating with a BSBA, Brian worked for a small ISP in Boone, NC where he developed websites and repaired computers. From there, and ever since, Brian has been devoted to Jackson Sumner & Associates.

Brian has co-written a book on the history of Watauga County, has been involved in hemoglobinopathy research funded by the CDC, and completely restored a circa 1880 colonial revival home. Brian is a board member of the Computer Science Department at Appalachian State University. He enjoys spending time with his three sons, family, designing T-shirts, writing music, hiking, volunteering at Habitat for Humanity, and gardening.
