This week, we observed the 18th year since September 11th, 2001. When we think back to that time, we remember how our CEO, Wayne Sumner got an idea to help a member of the FDNY that was at ground zero. He called up the union and talked with them about his idea of “adopting” a firefighter.

Because of his big idea, for the JSA Christmas party that year, we welcomed Danny Peritore. Danny was a 20-year veteran firefighter and was the engineer of FDNY Engine 10 – the second on the scene at the World Trade Center in New York on September 11th. The unit lost four men, its trucks and its building. Danny himself, very nearly lost his life that day when the towers came down. We were so fortunate to meet Danny and host him here in NC in December of 2001 for his story of the bravery and grace he witnessed that terrible day.

JSA flew Danny down from New York and picked him up at the airport in a limo on Friday and brought him into town with a fire truck escort. On Saturday, JSA held our annual Christmas Party, and for an hour, Wayne interviewed him about his experience. The stories heard from him were heart-breaking and awe-inspiring. They highlighted the tremendous heroism of our fire, police, and rescue workers who put so much on the line for total strangers every day.

JSA was able to raise money and present Danny with a check since he was unable to work after the event. Danny is retired now but has been back to visit, and we are so honored to call him ‘friend.’ We will never forget.
